UU Sunday

Time: 10:10:00 AM
Description:
4th Sunday of January, Unitarian-Universalist Program, Associate Speaker Rob Brink will present: "Evidence vs. Influence: Why simple facts don't win arguments, but love might".

When a 2010 research study introduced the world to the "backfire effect," the concept quickly spread. The study was cited hundreds of times and received references in national news, where it was sometimes offered as proof we live in a post-truth age. Recent studies provide more nuance, showing that people, even the most partisan people, are not as fact-immune as we feared. We are definitely, however, fact resistant when a particular fact undercuts a deeply held belief. Join us for a quick and dirty introduction to the art and science of influence. You'll walk away feeling hopeful, and perhaps a little more ready for your next discussion with a fact-resistant friend.

Childcare will be available.
