Free Thought Forum—Chuck Park
Date: 04/21/2019
Time: 10:10:00 AM
Description:
For the 3rd Sunday of April, Chuck Park will speak at our Free Thought Forum on The Power of Stories

Our species has been molded by generations of stories told by elders to influence and direct children to adopt the ways of their clan. The children are young and the stories will be believed - for children lack the skills to verify. If the stories are presented by a skilled orator capable of enlisting fear and awe it is probable that the children will be molded in deep and fundamental ways that can influence a lifetime of perceptions about self and others. Our species has not yet designed an alternate way for preparing youth. Children must learn, and the use of stories has become a mandated conduit for adulthood and social acceptance.

Thus, stories constitute a vital role of influence for the ideological development of humans – an inevitable means of learning from youth to adulthood. But there is a problem. Stories can be designed to misinform and control attitudes and behavior.

We live in a society that spends billions of dollars for the purpose of developing stories to influence votes and consumer behavior. The ability to control the means of telling stories is increasingly influenced by a small but powerful group of oligarchs. Are citizens in our society doomed to become puppets of the rich and powerful?
