Free Thought Forum - Perla Rubio
Date: 08/18/2019
Time: 10:10:00 AM
Description:

For the 3rd Sunday of August, our speaker will be Perla Rubio, a student at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she is also a Project Assistant in the Immigrant Justice Program. Her topic will be Reflections on Family Detention at Dilley Texas.

In August of 2018, Ms. Rubio travelled with a group of UW Law School students to Dilley, Texas to assist immigrant families detained at the South Texas Family Residential Center prepare for their credible fear interviews, the first stage of an asylum petition.

From Perla: "In this presentation, I will first share some basic information about our current asylum law and highlight some of the current court cases that have affected this law. Second, I will share my experience and reflections about how asylum and the current changes have affected immigrant families currently detain and share my own experience volunteering at Dilley. Finally, I want to have an opportunity to share some of the ways in which our communities can help."

Free Thought Forums continue the legacy of free and open inquiry established more than 150 years ago by the founders of the Free Congregation. As their Sunday programs did then, today’s Forums express our commitment to free thought in religion, guided by reason, and inspired by the “books of Nature and World History.” Please join us; you are always welcome! Childcare is available, too!
